The face and hands are constantly exposed, which is among the main reasons that they’re the first components of the body to show signs of ageing. Whether they are confronting the cold, wind and rain of winter or the heat of the sun in summer, all types of weather can affect the skin. And it’s not just the weather; the pollution and car exhaust fumes may also play a part in ageing our skin.
Lots of stuff accelerate the ageing process of the skin:
Stress – signals of stress can appear on your skin, nails and hair.
Sun harm – the sun is responsible for the majority of the visible signs of skin ageing. UVA rays emitted by sunlight can cause pigmentation, reduced skin elasticity through elastin and collagen breakdown, and skin-texture quality.
Smoking – exposure to smoke, even secondhand smoke, can lead to damage to the elastin fibres causing sagging to the skin, age spots and wrinkles and lines around the mouth.
Pollution and the environment – may cause fine lines and dark circles under the eyes. Dehydrated skin can leave the skin dry, rough and itchy and the city dirt and dust clogging up the pores can cause stains and make the skin appear lifeless and dull.
One of the primary things we notice as a result of aging, is the reduction of quantity. As we age our facial fat is usually lost, causing the soft tissues to become thinner. Collagen; the dense fibres for strength, and elastin; the elastic fibers for suppleness, will become less elastic and firm as we get older, letting the soft tissue in the face to sag. This leads to the face looking thinner and facial bones appearing more prominent.
The lips – there is less production of elastin and collagen meaning that the aging skin is vulnerable to the effects of gravity and may sag, resulting in jowls and bags under the eyes.
The mouth – laugh lines deepen and the fine lines that surround the lips, called smokers lines start to show, and we lose definition leading to lipstick bleed.
Age spots – these occur when the pigment cells in the skin growth in certain areas and cluster together, leading to sun spots, freckles or liver spots.
The eyebrow – benefits wrinkles and furrows through repetitive facial expression motions, made over time.
The skin – generalised wrinkling of the face may occur because of thinning ageing skin. Decreased skin cell turnover will result in thinner crepe like skin. More adult skin, also has fewer sweat and oil glands, therefore it’s prone to dryness.
